Actorobserver bias4/22/2024 ![]() ![]() The background to this hypothesis was social psychology’s increasing interest in the cognitive mechanisms by which people make sense of their own and other people’s behavior. Jones and Nisbett’s (1971) hypothesis implies that a student who studies hard for an exam is likely to explain her own (the “actor”‘s) intensive studying by referring to the upcoming difficult exam whereas other people (the “observers”) are likely to explain her studying by referring to her dispositions such as being hardworking or ambitious. They hypothesized that “actors tend to attribute the causes of their behavior to stimuli inherent in the situation, while observers tend to attribute behavior to stable dispositions of the actor” (Jones & Nisbett, 1971, p. Actor-observer bias is evident when subjects explain their own reasons for liking a girlfriend versus their impressions of others’ reasons for liking a girlfriend. The hypothesis of an “actor–observer asymmetry” was first proposed by social psychologists, Jones and Nisbett in 1971. In contrast, observers tend to provide more dispositional explanations for a friend’s behavior ( Figure). This supports the idea that actors tend to provide few internal explanations but many situational explanations for their own behavior. In contrast, when speculating why a male friend likes his girlfriend, participants were equally likely to give dispositional and external explanations. The participants’ explanations rarely included causes internal to themselves, such as dispositional traits (for example, “I need companionship.”). When asked why participants liked their own girlfriend, participants focused on internal, dispositional qualities of their girlfriends (for example, her pleasant personality). One study on the actor-observer bias investigated reasons male participants gave for why they liked their girlfriend (Nisbett et al., 1973). However as observers, we have less information available therefore, we tend to default to a dispositionist perspective. ![]() As actors of behavior, we have more information available to explain our own behavior. ![]() The actor-observer bias is the phenomenon of attributing other people’s behavior to internal factors (fundamental attribution error) while attributing our own behavior to situational forces (Jones & Nisbett, 1971 Nisbett, Caputo, Legant, & Marecek, 1973 Choi & Nisbett, 1998). If you came home from school or work angry and yelled at your dog or a loved one, what would your explanation be? You might say you were very tired or feeling unwell and needed quiet time-a situational explanation. When it comes to explaining our own behaviors, however, we have much more information available to us. Due to this lack of information we have a tendency to assume the behavior is due to a dispositional, or internal, factor. The only information we might have is what is observable. Why do you think we underestimate the influence of the situation on the behaviors of others? One reason is that we often don’t have all the information we need to make a situational explanation for another person’s behavior. So a naïve observer would tend to attribute Greg’s hostile behavior to Greg’s disposition rather than to the true, situational cause. Returning to our earlier example, Greg knew that he lost his job, but an observer would not know. ![]()

MEZZO: The major difference between micro and mezzo level social work is that instead of engaging in individual counseling and support, mezzo social workers administer help to groups of people. Micro social work involves meeting with individuals, families, or small groups to help identify, and manage emotional, social, financial, or mental challenges, such as helping individuals to find appropriate housing, health care, and social services. The active voice is the dominant voice used in English. This is called the prepositional passive or pseudo-passive (although the latter term can also be used with other meanings). In sentences of the second type, a stranded preposition is left. (subject Tim corresponds to the complement of the preposition on) (subject we corresponds to the indirect object of give) The subject of the passive voice usually corresponds to the direct object of the corresponding active-voice formulation (as in the above examples), but English also allows passive constructions in which the subject corresponds to an indirect object or preposition complement: With agent: The paper was marked by Mr.If the agent is mentioned, it usually appears in a prepositional phrase introduced by the preposition by. Rather than conjugating directly for voice, English uses the past participle form of the verb plus an auxiliary verb, either be or get (called linking verbs in traditional grammar), to indicate passive voice. Other languages, including English, express the passive voice periphrastically, using an auxiliary verb.Įnglish, like some other languages, uses a periphrastic passive. The Austronesian language Kimaragang Dusun also indicates passive voice by verb conjugation using the infix, ⟨in⟩. ![]() In Swedish, the agent can be expressed by means of a prepositional phrase with the preposition av (equivalent here to the English "by"). Different languages use different methods for expressing the agent in passive clauses. ![]() In Latin, the agent of a passive sentence (if indicated) is expressed using a noun in the ablative case, in this case servō (the ablative of servus). Nynorsk uses " å verte" or " å bli" + past participle for passive voice, and Swedish and Danish use the passive suffix " -s" and Icelandic uses " að verða" or " að vera" + past participle or "- st" suffix for middle voice. The passive forms in Nynorsk are restricted to being accompanied by an auxiliary verb, which is not the case in Swedish and Danish. Norwegian ( Nynorsk) and Icelandic have a similar system, but the usage of the passive is more restricted. Examples of languages that indicate voice through conjugation include Greek, Latin, and North Germanic languages such as Swedish. In some languages, passive voice is indicated by verb conjugation, specific forms of the verb. The passive voice may also be used to avoid specifying the agent of an action.ĭifferent languages use various grammatical forms to indicate passive voice. This may be done to foreground the patient, recipient, or other thematic role it may also be useful when the semantic patient is the topic of on-going discussion. The use of passive voice allows speakers to organize stretches of discourse by placing figures other than the agent in subject position. ![]() Many languages have both an active and a passive voice this allows for greater flexibility in sentence construction, as either the semantic agent or patient may take the syntactic role of subject. This is not always the case for example in Japanese a passive-voice construction does not necessarily decrease valence. Thus, turning an active sense of a verb into a passive sense is a valence-decreasing process ("detransitivizing process"), because it syntactically turns a transitive sense into an intransitive sense. Typically, in passive clauses, what is usually expressed by the object (or sometimes another argument) of the verb is now expressed by the subject, while what is usually expressed by the subject is either omitted or is indicated by some adjunct of the clause. In contrast, the sentences "Someone pulled down the tree" and "The tree is down" are active sentences. For example, in the passive sentence "The tree was pulled down", the subject ( the tree) denotes the patient rather than the agent of the action. This contrasts with active voice, in which the subject has the agent role. In a clause with passive voice, the grammatical subject expresses the theme or patient of the main verb – that is, the person or thing that undergoes the action or has its state changed. A passive voice construction is a grammatical voice construction that is found in many languages. ![]() Windows 10 desktop clock4/22/2024 ![]() ![]() Part 3: Put a Floating Clock on Windows 10 Desktop ![]() You can download one of them to display a digital clock on Windows 10 Desktop.Īt this moment, you will be able to see the visible clock on Windows 10 Desktop. Element 113 was also discovered by a team of Japanese scientists and was named in respectful homage to Ogawa's work. The symbol Np was later used for the element neptunium, and the name "nihonium", also named after Japan, along with symbol Nh, was later used for element 113. As time passed with no repetitions of the experiments or new work on nipponium, Ogawa's claim faded away. ![]() He did not reveal this publicly, because under the Japanese university culture before World War II it was frowned upon to point out the mistakes of one's seniors, but the evidence became known to some Japanese news media regardless. Just before Ogawa's death in 1930, Kenjiro Kimura analysed Ogawa's sample by X-ray spectroscopy at the Imperial University of Tokyo, and said to a friend that "it was beautiful rhenium indeed". Ogawa's work was often incorrectly cited, because some of his key results were published only in Japanese it is likely that his insistence on searching for element 43 prevented him from considering that he might have found element 75 instead. In fact, he had found element 75 (rhenium) instead of element 43: both elements are in the same group of the periodic table. In 1908, Japanese chemist Masataka Ogawa announced that he had discovered the 43rd element and named it nipponium (Np) after Japan ( Nippon in Japanese). Due to increases in recycling and a drop in demand for rhenium in catalysts, the price had dropped to US$2,844 per kilogram (US$1,290 per pound) as of July 2018. Because of the low availability relative to demand, it is expensive, with price reaching an all-time high in 2008/2009 of US$10,600 per kilogram (US$4,800 per pound). The second-most important use is as a catalyst: it is an excellent catalyst for hydrogenation and isomerization, and is used for example in catalytic reforming of naphtha for use in gasoline (rheniforming process). These alloys contain up to 6% rhenium, making jet engine construction the largest single use for the element. Nickel-based superalloys of rhenium are used in combustion chambers, turbine blades, and exhaust nozzles of jet engines. It was named after the river Rhine in Europe, from which the earliest samples had been obtained and worked commercially. It was rediscovered by Walter Noddack, Ida Tacke and Otto Berg in 1925, who gave it its present name. Rhenium was originally discovered by Masataka Ogawa in 1908, but he mistakenly assigned it as element 43 rather than element 75 and named it nipponium. It shows in its compounds a wide variety of oxidation states ranging from −1 to +7. It resembles manganese and technetium chemically and is mainly obtained as a by-product of the extraction and refinement of molybdenum and copper ores. It has the third-highest melting point and second-highest boiling point of any element at 5869 K. With an estimated average concentration of 1 part per billion (ppb), rhenium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. It is a silvery-gray, heavy, third-row transition metal in group 7 of the periodic table.
